Obituary for Mavis M Masters

Mavis M  Masters
Funeral services for longtime Jay resident, Mavis Merle (Stone) Masters, 75, were held Friday, October 21, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Jay, Oklahoma. Officiates for the service were her son, Steven Masters, and grandson, Bryan Masters. Committal and interment services followed at the Mayesville Cemetery in Mayesville, Arkansas.

Mavis was born on November 2, 1936 to Clarence and Ada (Quick) Stone, near Eucha, Oklahoma in Delaware County. She passed on from this life on October 18, 2011, with family by her side.

Mavis was reared and educated in Jay, Oklahoma and graduated with the Jay High School Class of 1954. She also attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK for two years.

Mavis married Ray Masters on July 11, 1953, in Picher, OK. During their marriage, they lived in Oklahoma, California and Arizona. She was not afraid of hard work and held various jobs throughout the years, including work as a Skip Tracer, Real Estate Agent, Advertising Sales Representative for Armed Services Publishers, Secretary for Colorgraphics Printing and Bookkeeper for Masters Electric.

Mavis enjoyed being involved with church activities, such as teaching Sunday School, playing the piano and organ, cooking for various events and much more. She developed numerous lifelong friendships through her involvement with area churches.

Mavis loved living in Jay and was greatly involved in her community. She helped establish the Jay Education Foundation and served on their board for 20 years. She was also involved with the Homemaker's Club, the Historical Society and had great pleasure in entering her home canned goods and oil paintings in the County Fair. Mavis liked to win in the competitions and took home numerous blue, red and white ribbons.

Mavis treasured her family and valued her friends. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ray Masters, of the home; three sons, Kerry Masters and wife LeNeal of Jay, OK, Steve Masters and wife Pam of Denham Springs, LA, and Russell Masters and wife Carol of Jay, OK; 7 grandchildren, Michelle Gros and husband Rob of Baton Rouge, LA, Mark Masters and wife Paige of Oklahoma City, OK, Danielle Blackwell and husband Matt of Denham Springs, LA, Bryan Masters and wife Sarah of Baton Rouge, LA, Joshua Masters and wife Amber, of Tulsa, OK, Sarah Masters of Dallas, TX and Lindsay Masters of Denham Springs, LA; two great-grandchildren, Novalee Gros and Brayden Blackwell, and another great-granddaughter is due in December; and a host of other family and friends.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ada Stone; two brothers, Gerald Stone and Gaylen Stone; and one sister, Ruby Clark.

Serving as casket bearers were Kerry Masters, Steve Masters, Russell Masters, Mark Masters, Bryan Masters and Josh Masters. Honorary casket bearers were Rex Brixey, Barry Litman, Matlock Jeffries, and Dick Medley.

In memory of Mavis, the family has requested that donations be made to the Jay Education Foundation, which was a very important part of her life. Donations can be made through Johnnie Earp at Grand Savings Bank in Jay, OK, or made directly through the Jay Public Schools.
