on letting go of resentments
I was privileged to meet Charlie here in England at a Big Book Study in 1996 - a truly life changing experience. I can see him still, talking about how some of the people on our resentment list have been dead and buried years ago, but how they are reaching out from the grave and hurting us still every day - and we are letting them do that. As he talked I can recall his hand reaching out over the podium, and the futility of this way of living washed over me like a shock wave. He said some of us would rather stay in today's pain than take a chance on changing - and I thought - not me anymore! He said so many wise and wonderful things and used his talents freely for the benefit of us all. He was also a very funny man with a cracking sense of humour, I can hear him laughing still. God bless you Charlie and your family, mere words cannot express my gratitude for the part you have played in my recovery. I am a better person because of you.
