Obituary for Lowell Leslie Coon

ARNOLD MOORE & NEEKAMP FUNERAL HOME, BARTLESVILLE, OK (918) 336-5225 -

Lowell Leslie Coon passed away peacefully at home on October 1, 2018, following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 19, 1922 to Judson McClain and Ethel Lillian (Evans) Coon in a five room farm house, one and one half miles east of Spickard, Missouri, where he was raised and attended school.

He joined the Army of the United States, was inducted in January, 1942 and served in England, North Africa and Italy, remaining in Europe continuously for 4 years until he was discharged in September 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

Upon returning to the states, Lowell attended the University of Missouri on the GI Bill, earning Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Civil Engineering. During his time at MU, he met Sara (Sally) Louise Weller, whom he married June 10, 1950.

He was employed by Phillips in March 1952, where he was involved in many construction projects involving service stations, pipelines and support facilities. During their time with Phillips, Lowell and Sally lived in Odessa, Amarillo, Tampa, St. Augustine, Raleigh and Baltimore, before moving to Bartlesville in 1966, where he lived until his death. He retired from Phillips in August 1985.

Lowell was so many things – a man of faith and convictions, a child of the Great Depression, an Army Veteran, an engineer, a Boy Scout leader, a fisherman, and a proud father, grandfather, uncle, brother and son. Married to the same woman for 68 years, he loved her and her home cooking, music, trees, flowers, birds and baseball, especially his St. Louis Cardinals. He greatly believed in personal responsibility and in serving others. In retirement, he continued to work with the Boy Scout Troop 111, worked on Habitat for Humanity projects and served on the City of Bartlesville Sanitary Sewer Improvement Oversight Committee. He was a faithful lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and greatly enjoyed volunteering in various capacities and sharing in the fellowship of the Bartlesville First Church United Methodist community, particularly the Home Builders Sunday School Class.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Gerald Dean Coon, Amy Inez Morrison, Lucille Minerva Axtell, and infant brother Russell Coon. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sara, whom he referred to as “the love of his life,” their three children Leslie Bohon-Bothwell and husband Phillip Bothwell of Norman, Paul Coon and wife Diana of Dallas, and David Coon of Phoenix. He also leaves five grandsons, William David Bohon and wife Elizabeth, Lawrence Bothwell, John Paul Bohon, Dustin Bothwell and Brian Bohon and husband Florentino Pamintuan. During his life, Lowell was blessed to enjoy the love of many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The family wishes to express their tremendous gratitude to the many health care professionals and caregivers that have provided so much vital care and assistance to Lowell over the past several years. Each treated him as though he was theirs, and each was eternally patient with and supportive of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Church Bartlesville or the local Boy Scouts of America.
