Frances June Cody, age 86, of Nowata, Oklahoma passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.
June Cody was born on July 19, 1931 in Nowata, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Andy Van Hensley and Mattie Oweda (Graves) Hensley. She grew up in Nowata, Oklahoma on her Family’s homestead surrounded by numerous close family members. She graduated from Nowata High School, and went on to later marry and have her son Charles.

After graduating she went to work for Mr. Pendleton’s Law office. She later on moved to Kansas and began working as the executive secretary for Senator Pearson. She continued to work with him through his career and joined him in Washington, D.C.. While in DC she had opportunity to work for multiple U.S. Senators. She made many lifelong friends, and received numerous awards and accolades during her time in DC.
June later decided to return to Kansas to be near her son and family. She continued to work as an executive secretary in a new position with the USDA. June remained with the USDA until her retirement.
After retiring June moved back to Nowata, to be near her mother and family. June enjoyed sewing, collecting oriental artifacts and spending time with the her family and friends. She continued to reside in Nowata until her passing

Survivors include a Niece whom she considered a Daughter, Ouida Brady and wife Lynez Brady of the home, daughter-in-law; Elaine Cody of Olathe, KS, One granddaughter; Elizabeth Raffety and husband Kyle of Olathe, KS. Great Nephew, Charlie Brady, whom she considered a grandson, and his wife Ku of Tulsa, OK, Four Great Grandchildren. One Nephew; Michael Hensley of Glenpool, Ok, Two Nieces; Carrie Stacy and husband Curtis of Nowata, Ok, and Shari Love and husband Charlie of Bartlesville, OK, And a great niece, Krystal Owens of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and many beloved nieces and nephews and family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Andy Van Hensley and Mattie Oweda (Graves) Hensley, Her brother Howard Hensley, and sister Helen Stroud. As well as her former husband, David Cody and Her son Charles “Chuck” Cody.

June will be available for viewing at Benjamin Funeral home prior to the services. Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 18, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. at the Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery in Nowata, Oklahoma. Rev. Lynez Brady will be the officiant. Interment will follow in the Nowata Memorial Park Cemetery.

June Cody was born on July 19, 1931 in Nowata, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Andy Van Hensley and Mattie Oweda (Graves) Hensley. She grew up in Nowata on her Family’s homestead surrounded by numerous close family members. She had happy memories of her time with her Aunts and Uncles and many double cousins. She enjoyed growing up in the close knit community of Nowata, being with her high school friends and her job as a soda jerk. She went on to graduate from Nowata High School, and went on to later marry and have her son Charles “Chuck” Cody.

After graduating she went to work for Mr. Pendleton’s law office as a legal secretary. She treasured her time there with the experiences she gained and all the friends she made. She often recalled when Arch Sequichie called her Gee-kay-gay meaning Red Headed Woodpecker, due to her beautiful red hair.
As life progressed June moved to Kansas with her husband David L Cody and son and began to work as a bank secretary. In her time in Kansas she made many lifetime friendships including the 60 year friendship with Mrs. Dorothy Pruitt. She treasured all of the memories and photographs of their time together.
While in Kansas June worked on the campaign for James Pearson who later became the US Senator for Kansas. He promoted her to be his executive secretary, and she continued to work with him through his career. June joined him in Washington, D.C., where she made many lifelong friends and had the opportunity to work with multiple U.S. Senators as their Executive Secretary. She received numerous awards and accolades during her time in DC.

June later decided to return to Kansas to be near her son, daughter in law Elaine, and Granddaughter, Elizabeth (Cody) Raffety. She continued to work as an executive secretary in a new position with the USDA, and enjoyed being a Grammie and making memories. June remained in Overland Park KS in her position with the USDA until her retirement.
After retiring June moved back to Nowata, to be near her mother, Oweda Hensley. She was overjoyed to be near her sister Helen Stroud and her family, as well as her Niece, Ouida Brady, whom she considered a daughter, and Ouida’s family including her wife Lynez Brady, Charlie Brady, who June considered a grandson, and his wife Ku as well as her great grandchildren, Kyle Brady, Caitlyn Brady, Abigail Brady and Ouida Elizabeth Brady.

June enjoyed sewing, gardening and crafting for many of her friends and family members. She collected oriental artifacts, and often spoke about her travels and trip to Hong Kong. Most of all June enjoyed spending time with the her family and friends. June was known as Aunt June to many in the community and was always happy to listen to a story and offer encouragement and advice. She had a welcoming personality and an open door to anyone in need. Friends often became members of the family.

June continued to reside in Nowata until her peaceful passing, surrounded by her family.
