Edna Marie Hastings Sultzer, 87, lifetime resident of Jay, was called to Heaven on Wednesday, October 18th at Monroe Manor after lengthy illness. She was born on March 7, 1930 of the union of Bill Hasting and Viola Turner Watermelon in rural Jay previously Oklahoma Indian Territory being Cherokee and whose legacy included her ancestors making the long trek on the Trail of Tears to the territory.
Edna was joined in marriage to Riley Sultzer in September 1949. They shared a life together for 59 years before Riley’s passing in June of 2008; she was preceded in death by her parents, her husband her one day old infant son, Billy Joe O’Field, her sister, Ruth Pickup, her son-in-law, Terry P. Sixkiller, and most recently her son, Leon Riley Sultzer.
Besides being a long standing dedicated member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church, serving as a deaconess prepared communion, attended all meetings for the church outside of regular service and contributed very much to her church family over the years, she enjoyed quilting, cooking, old time country music taking the grandkids to Wood’s Grocery or Kelly’s to get them treats like ice cream or a winter coat and shopping with her best friend, Ms. Lorene Thompson. Other activities she had fun with beating everyone at Ring Toss, Dominoes, and Checkers. Her sense of humor shined when she was beating her kids at Ring Toss, while grinning ear to ear because her grandkids always wanted to be on her team.
Some traditional meals she prepared and passed on to her family were kanuchi, wishi, oo-gook, wild onion and eggs, bean balls and flat cornmeal bread. She was a master of dumpling, banana pudding and pies of every kind. Family and friends alike possess one-of-a-kind handmade quilts Edna gifted them with upon completing each one with stitches of love. She always enjoyed the Huckleberry Festival, especially when her family would all sit in her and Riley’s yard together to watch the marvelous fireworks show. She liked being outside tending her flowers and plants. Edna was a caretaker for family and friends. She was a very giving soul.
Along with her Native American heritage, Edna was of Scottish and Irish descent. Prominent citizens in establishing the Piney Community with a school, church, and O’Field Trading Post, were both her maternal grandparents and paternal grandparents: Daniel and Sally O’Field Turner, Daniel’s parents, William Turner and Nellie Rabbit Turner, together with William’s parents, Isaac and “Polly Turner”, Edna’s 2nd great grandparents. Her 3rd great grandparents, (Isaac’s parents) were Tee-kah-loo-qua-ta-ke, father and Ka-haw-he-tah. Edna’s 2nd great-grandfather (Nellie’s dad) was Richard Rabbit. Some of Piney’s school teachers, including Mr. Whitmire and Ms. Glass, boarded with Edna’s great grandparents, the Reverend Benjamin O’Field and Annie Foreman O’Field. Benjamin’s parents were Dumpling O’Field and Elizabeth Wofford O’Field, Edna’s 2nd great grandparents and Dumpling’s father, being Captain O’Field. Annie Foreman’s father was John “Jack” Foreman. Edna enjoyed knowing her ancestors and sharing stories with her children and grandchildren of yesteryear.
