In Celebration of Okla Mae Hicks 10/28/35 -7/10/17

Okla Mae departed this life Monday, July 10, 2017. She was born October 28, 1935 to Wendall and Elizabeth Phillips in Murphy, Ok. The family later moved to Vinita, Oklahoma where she attended and graduated from Attucks High School. She met and married Robert Hicks at an early age. They married June 28, 1953 and to this union (5) children were born. June Kilpatrick (Cleo), Rochester, NY, Robert (Bobby) Hicks, Jr. (Joyce), Rancho Cordova, CA, Rodney Hicks, Tulsa, OK, Michele Hicks, Tulsa, OK, Greta Hicks-Brooks (Michael), West Sacramento, CA. She became the proud grandmother to (7) grandchildren Kareem Kilpatrick, Cedric Kilpatrick, Jamila Bowman, Jamar Kilpatrick, Natasha Hicks, Christopher Hicks, Brianna Grant-Kilpatrick. To her crown was added great as well as great-great grandchildren.

Okla Mae came to know the Lord at an early age. She and her family moved to Tulsa, OK in 1966 where they all attended and served at Christ Temple CME. She later moved back to her home town of Vinita, OK in 1982 where she worked and lived until her health started declining. She then went to Tulsa where she lived with her son Rodney as her caretaker for three years.

Okla Mae lived a full life and loved being around her family and friends. Her love for music and singing showed itself in any church that she attended. She always wanted to sing to God’s glory. Oh, and did she love to dance… as soon as her song (which was any song) came on she would be the first one on the floor jitter-bugging. Those days will be missed for those of us that experienced her love for life, but where she’s going, she’ll be able to sing praises and dance until her hearts content.

Okla Mae leaves to cherish in her memory her children, grandchildren, 7 sisters, 2 brothers, many nieces and nephews, a host of longtime friends and family that are too many to mention, but you all know who you are and how much she loved you. She is preceded in death by her father, mother, and one brother.

We the family would like to thank everyone for all the love, prayers, and kind words you have shown us in this most trying time. Please continue to pray for us as we move forward in life without our first love…OUR MOTHER.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, July 17, 2017 at the Luginbuel Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 12 noon, Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Vinita with Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery in Chelsea, OK. Services are under the direction of Luginbuel Funeral Home.
